Chaukhandi Stupa Sarnath Varanasi

Chaukhandi Stupa is one of the most significant Buddhist monuments in India and an important landmark in Sarnath. This ancient stupa is believed to mark the spot where Gautama Buddha met his first five disciples while traveling from Bodh Gaya to Sarnath after attaining enlightenment. This meeting eventually led to the delivery of his first sermon and the foundation of the Buddhist Sangha.

Originally constructed during the Gupta period between the 4th and 6th centuries, the structure was later modified during the Mughal era. The most distinctive feature of the monument is its octagonal tower, which was added in the 16th century by Govardhan, son of Raja Todar Mal, to commemorate Emperor Humayun’s visit to the site.
