About Surat Castle
Standing close to the Tapi River in Chowk Bazaar, Surat Castle is one of the city’s most valuable historic landmarks. It is also commonly known as the Old Fort or Surat Fort. The present fort was developed between 1540 and 1546 under Sultan Mahmud Shah III, mainly to protect Surat from repeated Portuguese attacks. Its construction was supervised by Khudawand Khan, who strengthened the structure with thick walls, large circular bastions, iron fastenings and lead-filled joints.
Over the centuries, the fort passed through the Sultanate, Mughal and British periods, and each phase left its own mark. Today, visitors can walk through restored courtyards, defensive towers, barracks, gateways and exhibition spaces. Sections such as the Mughal Burj, Royal Burj, British Barracks, Tughlaq Building, treasury room and riverside structures make the visit more interesting than a simple fort walk. The elevated areas also provide attractive views towards the river and old Surat.
